The plan
Ask your plan
what it will pay.
Give your plan the precise medicine name and its prescribed medical use. Ask for an answer before building a budget around it.
Ask the plan, not just the care service
For Medicare drug cover, the medicine and its medical use matter, as of September 2026.
Even an accepted medical use needs to fit the plan’s drug list and approval rules for coverage, as of September 2026.
Formulary is the name for the plan’s medicine list. With prior authorization, payment needs the plan’s agreement before the prescription can be filled.
Medicare routes
The usual Medicare rule
As of September 2026, basic Medicare Part D excluded medicines used only for weight loss.
Medicare’s benefit for prescription medicines is Part D. A different accepted medical use may allow coverage, as of September 2026.
Ask which use the plan will assess. A drug name alone does not settle it.
The temporary Medicare route
Under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, certain weight medicines cost eligible people a $50 copay each month, as checked in September 2026.
GLP-1 medicines act like a hormone involved with blood sugar and appetite.
The amount you pay as your share is called a copay. The Bridge runs outside the usual Part D benefit.
In the September 2026 check, the published Bridge period started July 1, 2026 and was scheduled to end December 31, 2027.
Eligibility was tied to age, health, plan type and earlier medicine coverage, as of September 2026.
The September 2026 rules put type 2 diabetes care under ordinary Part D rather than the Bridge.
For medicines it covers, Part D limits your yearly spending from your own money. As of September 2026, the $50 paid through the Bridge did not count toward that Part D limit.

A copay card is a drug maker’s offer to lower part of an insured medicine bill.
Maker copay cards for these branded weight and diabetes medicines require commercial insurance, as of September 2026.
Commercial insurance means private or workplace cover. The cards exclude Medicare, Medicaid and military cover, as of September 2026.
A drug maker’s cash offer is separate: you pay outside insurance. Someone with Medicare or other government coverage may still qualify for that price, as of September 2026.
Questions for your plan
Is the exact product on the drug list for this use? Is prior approval needed? What will I pay at the pharmacy?
Ask whether cash spending counts toward your deductible. Deductible means the sum you first pay before your plan starts paying.
